'Dan surprised me with a trip to Paris for my birthday, which was three days before he proposed,' reveals Antonia. 'We were walking through the gardens under the Eiffel Tower when he stopped at a stone bench, got down on one knee and proposed. We then spent the whole day wandering around Paris drinking pink champagne, ending with a dinner river cruise around the city.'
Having been together for a decade by the time the wedding arrived, Antonia and Dan were keen to infuse their personalities, passions and the nature of their relationship into their day as much as possible. 'We had a timeline ' with bad haircuts and fashion choices ' to show how we have grown together over the years,' she says.
A vintage shabby chic aesthetic blended with modern rustic greenery perfectly complemented Trevenna's rural feel. Eucalyptus trailed along the trestle tables, staircases, wooden beams and signage, while Dan's handmade hexagon arch was abloom with flowers including dusky pink amnesia roses, blush pink David Austin roses, fresh eucalyptus and avalanche roses. 'We also had a plank hanging from the ceiling in the main barn with vintage bulbs underneath, which we covered with garden greenery that hung down over the sides,' adds Antonia.
With the roses, eucalyptus and rose gold accents nodding to Antonia's favourite things, Dan's laidback vibe was celebrated via his tweed and chinos ensemble, while an upcycled bike wheel table plan and a logo of his favourite football team on the cake alluded to his love of sport.
Macaroons served as favours and a reminder of their engagement, while tables were named after famous French monuments. 'It was these little things for us that really pulled everything together,' notes Antonia. 'We also wanted to have as many memories as possible so opted for a magic mirror photo booth that also acted as our guest book.'
The wedding feast provided another talking point. Canapés were followed by slow-roasted beef brisket, slow-roasted pork, and goat's cheese, spinach and sun-dried tomato tart with a mixed bean ragu. Meanwhile, a trio of desserts ' chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce, winter berry Eton mess, and lemon posset with a raspberry coulis ' along with the three-tiered drip cake were the sweet treats of choice.
'My gran ' who is the true queen of our family ' made an unexpected speech and had the whole room in tears,' says Antonia of one of her standout moments. 'She is 92 years old and an absolute diamond, and we were so amazed by it.'
After the first dance, which turned out to be Antonia and Dan's favourite memory of the day ' 'all our guests joined in and sung at the top of their voices ' it was amazing!' ' covers band Hitpinch and a silent disco saw many revellers partying until 4am.
'Do your research and stick to what you both really want and like,' she offers as advice to other couples. 'There are so many different themes, colour schemes, venues, ideas, styles, and it so easy to get overwhelmed by all the choice.'
Decisiveness is another trick to happy planning. 'Once you have chosen and booked things, don't go looking any further or you will change your mind,' she adds. 'And enjoy it!'
