With the name 'diamond' deriving from the Greek 'adamas', which translates as 'unconquerable' or 'unbreakable', the word itself echoes the durability that makes diamonds a perfect choice for use in engagement and wedding rings. "Diamonds are the hardest stone known to man and they won't scratch as easily as other gemstones," advises Laura Hoole from Erin Cox.
Then, of course, there's their entrancing beauty. "Being internally refractive, diamonds are the only gemstone that really sparkle even in the smaller sizes that Erin often adds into wedding rings," says Laura.
A diamond wedding ring or eternity ring is often set with a continuous line of diamonds symbolising never-ending love. "The diamonds should be identical in terms of size (measured by carat weight), cut, colour and clarity to create the effect of a seamless line of diamonds," explains Matthew Holt of Coopers Couture. "If the diamonds are of varying quality, the eye will be drawn by the stones that stand out. As the diamonds in an eternity ring tend to be small, it is more important to have the best quality cut grade you can. This will ensure light travels through the diamonds evenly and easily and will create the best sparkle."
As well as cuts of diamond - such as round, princess and oval - there's a dazzling choice of settings available. You might opt for a classic, contemporary or antique design; perhaps even commission a beautifully textured sandcast ring as demonstrated in these designs from Justin Duance. "I would recommend choosing a cut of diamond and setting that matches the engagement ring and compliments the ring without overpowering it," advises Katie. "Choose a timeless style that will stand the test of time and not date or go out of fashion."
