“Dave and I met in 2004 and he took me on my very first date, but our teenage love affair didn’t last long,” reveals Lizzie. Though the timing was never right to rekindle their romance in the ensuing years, the pair remained close friends until they were both single and decided to make a go of it. “I know it sounds cliché, but Dave swept me off my feet. He was determined to make up for those 12 years and he did; I’ve never felt more special or loved,” she says.
It was love at first sight when the couple set eyes upon The Green. “It has incredible grounds and views, and it was perfect for the outdoor ceremony we were hoping to have,” says Lizzie. “The thing that made this our venue was the all-inclusive feel. We wanted our own little wedding world for a weekend and The Green gave us this.”
The stunning blossom tree centrepieces which dressed their reception tables inspired the dreamily romantic look of the day, with blush pink and blossom motifs carrying through everything from the save the dates to the flowers and cake.
The outdoor ceremony featured special readings from Lizzie’s and Dave’s sisters while providing Lizzie with her personal highlight of the day: “walking back up the aisle after saying our vows and the pom-pom confetti throw – I remember this incredibly intense feeling of happiness”.
Welcome drinks were followed by live entertainment from The Swing Kings and a wedding breakfast of herby polenta, loin of pork and slow-roasted beef, salted caramel cheesecake and smashed meringue with seasonal macerated berries and vanilla cream: “The best thing I have ever eaten!” enthuses Lizzie.
And speaking of fond memories, Lizzie cites her sister’s maid of honour speech as a standout moment. “It was the perfect mix of funny and emotional. Everyone was sobbing. So many people said her speech was a highlight of the day,” she says. As for Dave, it was the golden hour shoot with his new bride that lingers in his memory. “We just walked and talked,” he says. “It was so lovely to have a few moments throughout the day where it was just us.”
Then it was time to party, which started with the first dance and was followed by a father-daughter dance. “The final song – Florence and The Machine’s You Got the Love – will stick in our minds,” recalls Lizzie. “We were all on the dance floor, arms around each other and I remember crying because I was so happy to be surrounded by everyone we loved most in the world after the most perfect day.”
“Enjoy it all,” she urges other couples. “Planning can be all-consuming and stressful, but don’t forget why you’re doing it. We tried to see the excitement in all the organising, from picking the rings to creating the table plan and everything in-between.”
