A blind date featuring a romantic dinner on Torquay's seafront led to "the most amazing connection and attraction from the moment our eyes met," reminisces Rachael. "We could not stop laughing all night. We had the most amazing first date together and the rest is history."
Ashley's proposal was similarly spellbinding: he dropped to one knee under a starlit sky overlooking the estuary at Salcombe Harbour Hotel and Spa during a romantic break. "We have always said that we have wanted to watch a sunrise together so we did," says Rachael. "It couldn't have been any more romantic."
The Spanish Barn in Torre Abbey appealed to the couple's desire for a simple backdrop that they could put their own stamp on. A romantic ambience was particularly important for the ceremony. "I became infatuated with the vision of a long aisle with candlelight, rose petals and a string quartet playing Disney love songs," explains Rachael.
"We drew inspiration from old school Hollywood glamour and The Great Gatsby era," she continues. Taking a simple and stylist approach to the aesthetic, a mood of glamour was echoed in everything from the transport choice of a white 1920s' Beauford to Rachael's lace applique and tulle gown.
The centrepieces of large white roses, hydrangea and twisted willows beautifully complemented the high ceilings and rustic mood of the barn, while white rose petals scattered down each side of the aisle with candles completed the magical ambience.
The mood of timeless romance continued with the soundtrack, which included the 4Tissimo String Quartet who played during the ceremony and in the gardens during the drinks reception. "They have a big Disney repertoire which is what we were looking for!" says Rachael.
The wedding feast comprised hog roasted pork, minute steak and lightly Cajun spiced chicken served with various sides followed by a trio of desserts: apple crumble with custard, lemon tart with raspberry coulis and chocolate profiteroles. In the evening, live band Session One filled the dance floor with their party hits, while guests tucked into pizzas from Kernow Forno.
Looking back at their day, the couple share the same favourite moment as "seeing each other for the first time as I walked down the aisle," reveals Rachael. "The overwhelming feeling of love that surrounded us from each other and family and friends is unforgettable. We wrote our own vows to each other which was so special and emotional."
