All The Fun of a Festival

Sophie and Leigh shared their first kiss in a tent at WOMAD, so it was only fitting that their wedding would feature plenty of music, good food and a fabulous festival vibe.

Marking their marriage in style with two celebrations, a small legal ceremony at Shoreditch House in London was followed by a big celebration in Devon. "After the urban chic of Shoreditch, for our Devon wedding we wanted to create a wedding festival - a weekend surrounded by family and friends," says Sophie.

With the celebrations taking place at Sophie's parents' home near Southpool, the vibe of their wedding was relaxed, fun and punctuated by colourful details. "The colours were greens and whites and purples and pinks - rooted in nature, but standing out at the same time," says Sophie.

Flanked by her bridesmaids in various shades of pink and purple, Sophie wore a bespoke dress by Ro Molloy and a birdcage veil. The bridal party supped bubbly during their boat trip to the venue, where an emotional ceremony took place in the woodland before guests seated on hay bales. During the ceremony, the wedding band led the congregation in a rendition of 'All You Need is Love'. "We had a humanist ceremony, and were keen to steer clear of any religious connotations. The Beatles hit the spot nicely and there wasn't a dry eye in the house," recalls Sophie.

Embracing the rustic setting, guests enjoyed celebratory drinks in the valley before settling down for dinner and speeches in the olive grove under a giant canopy provided by 10x15. While Ryan Wrigglesworth and Becky Brine provided a live jazz soundtrack, Dartmoor Kitchen delivered a feast of chargrilled lamb and seafood served with salads and a mouth-watering selection of puddings served on vintage cake stands from The English Tea Party.

"After the ceremonial exchange of cupcakes the dancing began, and the evening ended with the sunrise around a campfire in the woods," says Sophie. Looking back on her dreamy wedding, she comments, "There are so many stories we're still reliving - from the storm that hit the site the night before the wedding to the bridal party jumping off the boat onto the slipway at low tide then meandering up the hillside to meet the waiting guests. It was a pretty awesome day."

Their two-part wedding has armed the newly weds with plenty of advice: "Have fun with the wedding planning - yes it's hard work, but the party at the end will make it so worth it." They add, "Get friends and family involved. We couldn't have made our day work without the help of so many different people. The day belonged to them as much as us, and we're all still talking about it six months later."
