"Everyone remembers our wedding as the one with the amazing sunset, and that feels pretty special," says Sarah. Luckily for Sarah and Chris, the weather gods produced a bright blue-sky day when they tied the knot at stunning North Devon wedding venue Ocean Kave, meaning their theme of an amalgamation of blues was brought to fruition. "The day before," says Sarah, "it was raining so heavily, I had to drive up to the florist's door to collect my flowers for fear they would spoil in the downpour!" But they had no need to worry. "The beautiful weather gave way to the most incredible sunset across the sea," she says.
After a Lake District proposal atop Wrynose Pass where there was some confusion as to which finger the ring went on, Sarah and Chris began planning a day filled with lawn games, props and deckchairs overlooking the sea. Centrepieces of blue hydrangeas matched the theme and setting. "The one thing that remained constant were the shades of blue, as I wanted to take inspiration from the sea," says Sarah, while white rose buttonholes also complemented the cloud-scattered blue-and-white sky.
Sarah found it tricky to choose one dress that suited all her bridesmaids, so her creative mum made them herself. "We got to select the exact colours and the lengths of the dresses to suit all the girls," explains Sarah. The bride herself wore an elegant strapless gown with a pretty pink waistband, while the bouquets were a rustic, colourful mix of camomile and agapanthus.
With sweeping photographs taken on the field overlooking the coast, the couple managed a few cherished minutes together soaking up the scenery before guests settled at tables dressed with Polaroid photo place settings. Local food, like potted crab and Devon beef, followed by seasonal crumble with homemade clotted cream satisfied appetites before the cutting of the cake by Juicy Lucy Cupcakes in front of that impromptu sunset. The speeches followed; "Ben was funny, sincere, kind and quietly confident - everything that I know and love him to be," explains Sarah, before the party began.
At the end of the night, the bride and groom retired to the honeymoon suite to open their cards and presents with wonderful memories of their sunny seaside day. "The one memory we both will cherish forever is seeing our family and friends relaxed in the deckchairs, simply enjoying the view," says Sarah.
