It was Rebecca’s birthday when Gordon plucked up the courage to pop the question. “It was a beautiful sunny day, so we made up a picnic and walked into St Ives,” says Rebecca. “While taking photos of the scenery, Gordon seized the moment and tried to drop to one knee but ended up on two knees! For the first time in his life, I think he was speechless!” Presenting her with an art deco style ring, he finally found the words with which to propose.
Although still under construction when they viewed it online, Stennack Farm presented the perfect wedding space for the couple. “We were looking to create our own wedding and celebrate for at least three days with our friends and family,” says Rebecca, who was instantly sold on the farmhouse accommodation, hot tubs and exclusive-use offerings.
Taking their travels to California as inspiration, the couple styled the venue with a vibrant palette of yellows, pinks, greens and blues, creating the name settings, designing and printing their own stationery, and handmaking the signs using graffiti, stencils, spray paint and cut vinyls.
Bouquets of dahlias, roses and foliage mirrored the colour scheme along with stunning flower towers that adorned the end of the aisle. Milk churns brimming with flowers and an abundance of foliage were scattered throughout the venue, while the bridesmaids and groomsmen sported corsages and buttonholes to match.
The feast-style food featured the likes of mac & cheese balls, salads and lamb flatbreads. “We wanted fresh and crunchy food and it had to be colourful as it was part of our decoration,” explains Rebecca. This was followed by Magnum ice creams complete with dipping bowls, sprinkles and nuts. The evening food comprised Reuben toasties with pork belly bites and truffle fries washed down by a shot of ‘Craig Davids’ (tequila and pineapple juice), espresso martinis and sangria, fuelling guests to dance into the small hours.
“The speeches were filled with so much love,” recalls Rebecca when asked about her standout moments. “It was a very emotional day and it just felt amazing to have all our friends and family in one place to celebrate, including some people we hadn’t seen since we got engaged.”
“Get recommendations from friends and use suppliers local to your venue if you can,” she advises. “Speak to them on the phone or in person – they are going to be a part of your day, so you want to feel happy and at ease with them.”
