“It definitely wasn’t love at first sight!” admits Laura, who worked with Ross at a children’s soft play and party centre for several years before they properly spoke. “However, he won me over with our first date – a picnic by the river – and I have never looked back!” she smiles.
The couple were walking on Watergate Bay when Ross took the opportunity to pop the question. “He said he wanted to take a picture of me looking out to sea. I turned around and he was on one knee with a ring!" she says. "We celebrated with a bottle of bubbly, my parents and our two sons, then headed off to Boardmasters a few days later and celebrated with our friends!”
Adopting the sand-between-the-toes vibe for their wedding at Lusty Glaze saw Laura’s “relaxed, fresh and natural” vision come to life. “The venue itself is enough decoration, so we didn’t need to add much as it’s so beautiful,” she explains of her pared-back décor choices, which featured an abundance of foliage accompanied by white florals.
The ceremony set the laidback mood the couple had envisioned. “Our registrar was brilliant. She included our boys in the ceremony and made it relaxed and light-hearted,” says Laura. “We wrote our own vows, which Ross read with ease; however, I got too emotional and ended up not being able to get my words out!”
Heading off across the sun-kissed sands for photos, the couple relished their time together to take it all in – “I took my shoes off the moment the ceremony was over and just walked barefoot on the sand!” says Laura – before returning for Pimm’s and canapés on the beach alongside a live acoustic set. This was followed by a sit-down barbecue-style feast of handmade beef burgers, chicken and roast pepper skewers, sweet chilli salmon, roasted veg and halloumi skewers, sweet potato wedges and salads before everyone spilled back onto the sands for golden hour.
“It was exactly how we had pictured it to be. Everyone just chilled, enjoying the beautiful venue that we both love,” reminisces Laura.
Changing into her personalised Converse for the evening, the newlyweds hit the dance floor for their first dance to Just You and I by Tom Walker. An evening of live music and a DJ set ensued as guests enjoyed an array of food and drink including a pizza bar, cake of cheese, doughnut wall and the brilliantly beachy wedding cake decorated with coastal colours, shells and starfish, which was made by Laura’s sister-in-law. “Ross designed the cake and had full control over the design – I didn’t see it until the day!” reveals Laura.
“When the night had finished, no one wanted to leave! It had been the best day,” she reflects, citing their photo session as her favourite moment. “We laughed so much as we ran down the beach and I jumped on Ross for a piggyback. Then we just sat on the wall looking out to sea and taking a moment to think back on the day”.
“Don’t spend time stressing about the small stuff,” is her top note of advice. “And remember to just enjoy every moment! The bride and groom set the mood for the day!”
